My Story
On February 1, 2009, Jim began personal training with James House two times per week.  James suggested some general nutrition assistance in coordination with the regular exercise in order to give Jim the best chance for goal achievement.  This assistance included eating whole/natural foods with an emphasis on protein and carbohydrates in moderation.  Four months later, Jim completed a reassessment that clearly shows the positive impact a healthy lifestyle plays on health and fitness.

"It's nice to get the positive reinforcement of compliments from family, friends, and co-workers, but what has meant the most were the looks from my tailor when I brought him 20 pairs of pants to bring in at the waist and at my recent trip to visit my team of doctors.  They took a double take when they saw me smiling and saying things like nice work.  When they saw how much lower my blood pressure and cholesterol levels were they were very impressed and offered more words of praise.  Through the thoughtful guidance, continued support, and positive motivation I received from my relationship with James, I have been able to achieve, enjoy, and take advantage of a healthy lifestyle."

Planning for Around the Plaza
At the beginning of this year, we had great fun and success with our life-sized, fitness-themed board game, "Around the Plaza."  Members moved around "the board" by exercising regularly and were rewarded with coupons from various Stuyvesant Plaza merchants.  We are very excited to begin our Around the Plaza game again on February 1, 2010, and are even more excited to include additional merchants in our prize giveaways!

If you would like to add your business to Around the Plaza, please call 482-2266.  The game will start on February 1st and end March 31st.
Northeast Parent/Child Society Toy Drop
Plaza Fitness at StuyvesantPlaza is collaborating with the Northeast Parent & Child Society this holiday season by acting as a drop-off site for donated toys.

Northeast Parent and Child Society benefits children and families who reside in the Albany area.  They offer a full array of residential, special education, family foster care, children's mental health, family preservation, and career development programs.

Starting November 1st, Plaza Fitness will be accepting donations of newly purchased toys for the NPCS Holiday Hope Fund.
Inclement Weather
Now is a good time to remind everyone about inclement weather fitness center closings and modifications in operating hours.  In the event of severe weather, Plaza Fitness may open late, close for the day, or close early.  If local agencies declare a snow/ice emergency we may modify the hours of operation.  When we do modify the hours of operation, this information will be communicated through email and on the www.PlazaFitness.net calendar.

Incan Berry Display at the Front Desk By Brianna
As the Holistic Health and Nutrition Counselor here at Plaza Fitness, I am always in search of optimal foods for my clients, and the foods that I feel need the ultimate overhaul are snacks.  Snacks can be just as important as meals, so it's crucial that a person's snack is packed with whole food nutrition without compromising the convenience or the tastiness.  A favorite snack food of mine is the Incan Berry, a naturally dried berry from South America.  When we eat Incan berries, we are consuming an adaptogenic food, which helps to strengthen the body in times of stress.

With a pleasing, sweet flavor and a provocative tart tang, Incan Berries add a delicious new dimension to our diet while helping to moderate stress levels and improve our circulation. The flavor of Incan Berries has even been compared to dense, concentrated raspberries with a distant hint of the Amazonian Jungle Peanut.

Unique Benefits of the Incan Berry:
  • Incan Berries are an excellent source of beta carotene, vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, phosphorous, and protein. Incredibly, Incan Berries are one of the most protein-rich fruits at nearly 16% by dry weight, an extraordinary level of protein for a fruit.
  • The small, chewable seeds inside the Incan Berry have a mild laxative effect making them an excellent food for intestinal health and regularity.
  • Incan Berries are also considered to be a good source of Secretory IgA, a plant antibody that helps support the human immune system.
  • Incan Berries offer high levels of bioflavonoids, also known as vitamin P. Hundreds of studies on bioflavonoids have demonstrated they possess anti-sclerotic, antiviral, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, and antioxidant properties. Foods rich in bioflavonoids play a crucial role in detoxification and nutrient absorption. This class of nutrients has been studied for its role in preventing the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the blood vessels, and for its contribution to improve capillary strength.
  • Incan Berries also contain high levels of pectin. Long known for its ability to regulate the flow of food through the digestive tract, pectin also works to lower cholesterol levels, especially LDL cholesterol. This is crucial when placed alongside the effects of bioflavonoids in preventing the accumulation of oxidized cholesterol in the blood vessels. Pectin is safe for those challenged by diabetes, as it works to prevent surges in levels of blood glucose.  This makes Incan Berries a low-glycemic food.
Grab a small handful of Incan Berries following a workout and receive a tremendous health benefit for the rest of your day.
