WE'RE QUITE HONORED

Plaza Fitness at Stuyvesant Plaza has received the Recreation Provider of the Year Award from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC).

Plaza Fitness was one of many candidates and was recognized on the basis of its:
a) Customer oriented and non-traditional service approach as a public provider to people of all abilities;
b) Staff buy in, commitment, and willingness to provide a variety of services to support people with disabilities and other needs; and
c) Commitment to inclusive practices for people of all abilities.

We are delighted to be recognized for the inclusive, welcoming environment we have worked hard to foster since we opened our doors in November, 2003. At the same time, we look forward to a day when such awards are no longer necessary, when embracing the needs of people of all abilities becomes a generally accepted standard of behavior and business conduct.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY TO INCORPORATE PERSONAL WELLNESS SOLUTIONS

Personal Wellness Solutions, the educational branch of Plaza Fitness at Stuyvesant Plaza, announces an agreement with Syracuse University to provide educational development, systems, and procedures for their personal training program within the Department of Recreation. Members of our staff will be heading to Syracuse to lead a two-day training seminar in August to launch the program.

Personal Wellness Solutions is a template-based program for professional personal training staff development, incorporating the most progressive functional health recommendations, movement screens, corrective exercise techniques, and administrative procedures. The mission of Personal Wellness Solutions is to improve the professionalism and quality of the fitness industry in general, and personal training practices in particular.

PERSONAL TRAINING SUCCESS STORY

Ruth is a study in perseverance. A member since December 2005, she began training with the idea that she had to make substantial improvement in her mobility and her body composition by the time her seasonal business kicked into high gear the following spring. Working 8 days a week (seemingly) in season and having time to take care of herself wasn’t part of the plan. After six months of training with Jane twice a week, her lean body mass had increased as had her overall flexibility and range of motion, accompanied by a decrease in body fat.

Then she cut back her training, and work interfered with wellness. We found she had given up some ground when she returned the following December, and that was the last time work interfered with wellness for Ruth. She has gained the healthiest joint performance of the last several years, ever since beginning the Functional Movement Screen and corrective exercises. This May, Ruth achieved optimal or near optimal movement on 6 out of the 7 movement screens, a dramatic improvement from the limitations from arthritis pain she experienced during her first screen last September. Ruth also enjoyed a month of Dr. Mark Hyman’s Ultra-Metabolism home-delivered-meals program, to kick-start her metabolism and inspire her ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy nutritional intake during her business’ high season. She lost inches, pounds, and inflammation on the program and is committed to sticking with her new, less toxic eating habits.
