PILATES JOINS OUR MOVEMENT THERAPY STUDIO

More than a collection of exercises, Pilates has been developed and refined over more than eighty years of use and observation. One interpretation of Joseph Pilates’ fitness ideals is the Pilates Principles of Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breathing, and Flowing Movement.

Centering Joseph Pilates called the very large group of muscles in our center – encompassing our abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks – the “powerhouse.” Pilates felt that a strong powerhouse was essential for daily living.

Concentration Pilates demands intense focus. For instance, the inner thighs and pelvic floor may be accessed when doing a standing exercise that tones the triceps.

Control Joseph Pilates built his method on the idea of muscle control. Every Pilates exercise must be performed with the utmost control, including all body parts, to avoid injury and produce positive results.

Precision Every movement in the Pilates method has a purpose. The focus is on doing one precise and perfect movement, rather than many halfhearted ones. Eventually this precision becomes second nature, and carries over into everyday life as grace and economy of movement.

Breathing Joseph Pilates believed in circulating the blood so that it could awaken all the cells in the body. The blood has to be charged with oxygen and purged of waste gases through proper breathing. Full and thorough inhalation and exhalation are part of every Pilates exercise.

Fluidity Pilates mat exercises are designed to be performed fluidly. There are no static, isolated movements. Uniformly developed, integrated muscles then compliment good posture, suppleness, and natural grace.

Pilates expert Carmelina Trichillo has recently joined our team of movement therapy professionals and is available most days of the week for training with mat exercises and the Pilates Reformer apparatus. Whenever you are ready to embark on the Pilates method, call the front desk at 482-2266 and we’ll have Carmelina call you to schedule your Pilates session.

PERSONAL TRAINING SUCCESS STORY

Since November of 2005, Cindy has been using a combination of ActivTrax and personal training to stay motivated and consistent with her activity. Her progress over the past one year-plus has been well aligned with her training goals, including weight/body fat loss and increased muscle tone. And while she has lost 20 pounds and gained from 30% to 80% in her various strength assessments, there was a stubborn lack of change in an area important to her back health...her flexibility.

Trainer Jane and Cindy began alternating a Meridian Stretching training session with her strength routine from week to week. Meridian Stretching is an assisted stretching technique that requires the stretcher to generate resistance in the targeted muscle groups, with the assisting trainer helping to lengthen the muscles against the resistance. It requires only six to ten repetitions of a stretch to yield nearly immediate improvements in flexibility and stability around the joints. Within three stretching sessions, Cindy’s hamstring flexibility reached an optimal level, and after six sessions her sit-and-reach test results were nearly twice as far as she was able to reach back in November 2005.

You can transform your fitness inside and out, and we’ll provide the research-based guidance and support to help you along. Please call 482-2266 or ask at the front desk for an appointment with one of our fitness professionals to get results.

TAI CHI TIME CHANGE

Our Tai Chi group session is held on Thursday evenings, and the starting time is now changed to 6:30 pm. Interest in the martial art of Tai Chi is growing strong under the leadership of our instructor, Lorraine Noval. Its focused, flowing movements translate into better balance, flexibility, mind/body connection, and stress relief, and have also been shown to relieve arthritis and diabetes symptoms. To attend, please sign up for the session no later than 4:00 pm on the day of class by calling 482-2266.
