PERSONAL TRAINING SUCCESS STORY

A year ago, Mary made significant changes in her lifestyle to improve her health. Unfortunately, she gained a lot of weight when she quit smoking. She began eating healthier and training with Jane in November, after a four-year break from regular exercise.

The results of Mary’s reassessment in February illustrate an interesting situation many of our female clients encounter when they first get started on the road to a healthier lifestyle. Her flexibility in the major muscle groups of the legs was measurably improved in just 2 months time. Over an inch lost in her waist measurement, nearly 6 inches down in her abdomen, or “midriff,” and over an inch and a half down around the hips...and yet only a couple of pounds lower on the scale. How do we explain this? It reflects a change for the better in body composition, specifically an increase in lean muscle mass and a decrease in fat mass. A pound of muscle and a pound of fat both weigh a pound, right? Yet a pound of muscle takes up fewer inches, and that extra muscle will contribute to an increase in resting metabolism. Mary is very encouraged by those results, and is progressing toward her new goal of learning to run comfortably.

MINI-TRIATHLON IN APRIL

Welcome back our cross-training extravaganza, the Indoor Mini-Triathlon! It’s an all-day event on Wednesday April 26th, so you can participate any time of day you like. Complete a 1200 meter row, followed by a 5 mile bike ride, and a 2 mile run (or elliptical), an enjoy a great workout and a great sense of accomplishment. We can help you train for the event, and even help you set goal times to aim for. The mini-triathlon is also an active and healthy way to support a local health related organization, since all of your $10 entry fee goes to the American Diabetes Association.
